Joshua Reaffirms on Provocative "Kill" Remarks Towards Paul

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul face off
The YouTuber-turned-boxer is set to fight a significant challenge against former world titleholder AJ.

Anthony Joshua repeated his controversial remarks about being prepared to “kill” Jake Paul during a press event in Miami on midweek.

The remarks were initially uttered on the previous day when Joshua was questioned if he would show restraint against Paul, responding that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

Saturday's fight against the internet personality turned fighter has attracted concern over safety concerns and the size difference between the two athletes.

Fury Labels Joshua a “Disgrace”

Former titleholder Tyson Fury branded Anthony Joshua a “classless loser” for his extreme language.

But the 36-year-old fighter, explained his stance: “This is what I do, we fight. We have a licence to kill.

“I understand many people don't comprehend it but this is what my job is. I take pleasure in what I do. The outcome, happens - provided that my hand is held high, that's what's crucial, with all due respect.”

He added, “That's just the psychology we have to have as fighters. I don't know if other boxers think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more tame. The way my mind works. When you're in the squared circle, it's a risky thing. Anything can happen.”

“You pray your opponent leaves the ring in good health, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed knowing you just did your job. It was purely professional.”

Paul's Fiery Retort

Jake Paul, a considerable underdog in the fight as a natural lighter fighter, was equally fiery in his response.

“This is a modern day combat sport,” Paul declared. “I'm ready. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be no excuses when it's all said and done. Let's kill each other.”

Joshua will face his opponent, 28, at Florida's Kaseya Center in a fight many consider a glaring mismatch, with some arguing it should have been approved as an non-professional fight.

The professional contest will be contested over 8 three-minute rounds using standard 10oz padded gloves, with a stipulated maximum weight for the former champion.

Joshua Claims He Was “Called In to Rescue” Boxing

Despite the extreme terminology used, Joshua claimed he has been “called in to save” boxing.

“They want me to halt the Jake Paul phenomenon and I comprehend it and that's why I have to bear boxing on my back in this fight,” he added.

The news conference also had lighter exchanges, with AJ smiling as Paul sang a nursery rhyme to him.

The final staredown concluded without incident, with the underdog adopting a unusual pose before Joshua remained composed and lightly touched Paul's chain.

Paul & Joshua Dismiss Pre-Arranged Claims

The surreal nature of this bout has led to speculation about its authenticity, including suggestions that Joshua may be restricted from scoring a knockout.

“There's nothing in the contract, Joshua can attest to it. We're going to battle,” Paul insisted.

The former champion, wearing a valuable necklace, jokingly remarked, “The only thing in the agreement that got my attention was the payment.”

Paul has claimed on his platforms that the fight earnings will be extremely large.

Largest Shock in Sport's History?

Jake Paul first made his name as an online prankster, gathering a massive social media following.

He has not faced anyone of Joshua's skill level but maintained that his opponent would take him seriously.

“It's a wise move on his part,” Paul said. “This could potentially be, and will be, the largest defeat of his life.”

A win for the underdog would be arguably the biggest upset in the sport's annals.

It would undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on Joshua's record, but the fighter stated it would not spell the end.

“I would return again, move on,” he said. “I'll be main eventing again in a couple of years. That's life. I'm a player in the sport.”
