No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
