Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
