The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Incident as Police Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the recent violent attack at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant continued following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also expressed words of sorrow on social media, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, especially her parents.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a raid at a hotel about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Community Anxiety
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.
The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that raided the hotel seized a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was taken into custody, as was reported.
Condition of the Injured
Among those wounded, one pupil was released from the hospital, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.
An educational institution, a independent school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
More Condolences
Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, loved ones, and fellow students and grieve for of his bright future.”
National Context
Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
