Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
